our environmental pledge
Our compostable packaging is made from renewable resources and can be broken down in a few short months organically, reducing our discarded materials that would otherwise be deposited into a landfill.
Bliss Ice Cream uses World Centric and Eco Products for our bowls, cups, napkins, spoons and straws, which are all certified compostable in industrial facilities. The paper cups and fiber bowls are made from recycled paper or use FSC certified forestry products. All of the plastic cups, spoons and straws are a bio-based Poly Lactic Acid or PLA plastic. Since this special plastic is made from corn, it's completely renewable and doesn’t use any fossil fuels in the manufacturing process. This is how our plasticware can be broken down and returned to the earth through composting.
what is composting?
Composting is the process of collecting and properly mixing and managing shredded organic materials. Examples include food scraps, yard trimmings, animal waste and other organic products such as paper. From start to finish this process usually requires 90 days to complete. In Onondaga County, compost is commonly sold to municipalities, landscapers and private individuals for a variety of gardening purposes. Converting organic waste into compost and returning it to the earth is a great way to help reduce our collective waste.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation website, New Yorkers generate 4.5 pounds per person per day of trash. Reduce, reuse, recycle, compost is a great mantra to help us reduce our waste. Composting has reduced landfill growth by as much as 50% in some communities. In Syracuse, we are lucky to have New York’s largest commercial composting facility right here in Onondaga County run by OCRRA. Natural Upcycling is another great local resource who collects the compost and moves it to one of the two composting facilities.
